Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery can reduce the size of the stomach to help patients lose weight. Because a laparoscopic minimally invasive technique is used, sleeve surgery typically takes less than an hour and recovery is about 15 days. While this surgery can help patients lose significant weight in about four to six months, long-term results require serious dedication to a healthier lifestyle. *Note: There is no guarantee of Specific Results. Results can vary for each individual.
What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of restrictive bariatric procedure that encourages weight loss by decreasing stomach capacity. Your surgeon removes 75 to 85 percent of the stomach, leaving the organ roughly the size and shape of a banana.
The limited space in this sleeve helps patients satisfy their hunger with less food, substantially reducing how much they eat during the day. In addition, because the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin (the hormone that produces feelings of hunger) is removed, you will often feel less hunger in general. As a result, patients typically experience rapid and significant weight loss.
Gastric Sleeve vs. Gastric Bypass: Which is Right for You?
Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery are two of the most popular bariatric procedures that the Tijuana Bariatric Center can coordinate for patients who wish to achieve substantial weight loss. While the procedures share certain aspects, there are important differences that may make one surgery more appropriate for your needs. By working with a doctor within the Tijuana Bariatric Center preferred doctor network, you can determine whether gastric sleeve vs. gastric bypass surgery is right for you.
Comparing the Surgical Procedures
While gastric bypass surgery has been a trusted weight loss procedure for many years, gastric sleeve surgery is growing in popularity and shows promising results.
Gastric Bypass
In comparison to gastric sleeve surgery, a doctor will section the stomach off into two separate areas during gastric bypass surgery. The top portion, or pouch, is where the food you consume will be directed. The pouch will be connected to a minimal portion of the small intestine to reduce the number of calories which are absorbed by the body. Unlike gastric sleeve, gastric bypass relies on both malabsorptive and restrictive techniques.
Potential Risks
While the bariatric doctors in our network have completed thousands of surgeries without complications, both procedures share many of the same risks such as:
- Infection
- Gastrointestinal leakage
- Blood clots
- Malnutrition
While these procedures are both considered to be very safe, gastric sleeve surgery is less invasive. This can lead to certain benefits, such as reduced recovery time. Additionally, gastric bypass patients are more likely to develop dumping syndrome. This condition occurs when a patient consumes large amounts of sugar or eats certain foods too quickly and can cause vomiting, painful cramping, and diarrhea.
Expected Results and Lifestyle Changes
Both gastric sleeve and gastric bypass patients have reportedly lost more than half of their weight. However, results largely depend on a patient’s lifestyle and commitment to sustaining weight loss. While all bariatric surgery patients must adopt a healthy diet and exercise regimen, gastric bypass patients will need to consume greater amounts of vitamin and mineral supplements in order to maintain healthy levels in the body.*
